TRS Formula Breakdown
Your TRS retirement benefit is calculated using this formula:

Years of Service × 2.3% = Total Percentage

Total Percentage × Average of Highest Salaries = Annual Benefit

Annual Benefit ÷ 12 = Monthly Benefit
Example Calculation
Let’s look at a teacher with:
- 32 years of service
- $60,000 average salary
Calculation:
- 32 years × 2.3% = 73.6%
- $60,000 × 73.6% = $44,160 annual benefit
- $44,160 ÷ 12 = $3,680 monthly benefit
After typical deductions (taxes, health insurance):
- Estimated take-home: $2,900-$3,100/month*
(*Actual amount varies based on tax bracket and selected deductions)
Texas teachers typically don’t contribute to Social Security
If you’ve earned Social Security benefits from other jobs, WEP may reduce your Social Security benefit
WEP reduction can be up to $512 (2024) of your Social Security benefit
The reduction cannot exceed 50% of your TRS pension
2025 Contribution Limit:
$23,500
$23,500
