In Times of Loss: Your Roadmap to Veterans Burial Allowance – A Thorough Guide

Jan 26, 2024 | Blog

Losing a loved one is an emotional and challenging experience, and navigating the practicalities of arranging a veteran’s burial can add an additional layer of stress. Fortunately, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides burial allowances, often referred to as “Veterans death benefits,” to assist with covering burial, funeral, and transportation costs. In this guide, we will walk you through the eligibility criteria, benefits, application process, and necessary documents to ease the burden during a difficult time.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for Veterans burial allowances, certain eligibility criteria must be met. If you are responsible for the burial and funeral costs and won’t be reimbursed by any other organization, such as a government agency or the Veteran’s employer, you may be eligible. The following relationships or roles establish your connection to the Veteran:

  • Surviving spouse: This includes same-sex marriages.
  • Surviving partner from a legal union: A formal relationship documented by the state.
  • Surviving child of the Veteran, or parent of the Veteran: Blood relationship.
  • Executor or administrator of the Veteran’s estate: Officially representing the Veteran.

Additionally, the Veteran must not have received a dishonorable discharge, and one of the specified circumstances must be true, such as death due to a service-connected disability, while receiving VA care, or during authorized travel funded by the VA.

Exclusions

Burial allowances are not provided under certain circumstances, such as the individual dying on active duty, while serving as a member of Congress, or while serving a federal prison sentence.

Types of Burial Benefits

If eligible, you may receive various burial benefits, including:

  • VA burial allowance: Covers burial and funeral costs.
  • VA plot or interment allowance: Assists with the cost of the plot or interment.
  • VA transportation reimbursement: Covers the cost of transporting the Veteran’s remains to the final resting place.

The VA extends burial benefits to all legal burial types, including cremation, burial at sea, and even donating the remains to a medical school.

Time Limit for Filing

It’s crucial to file a claim for a non-service-connected burial allowance within two years after the Veteran’s burial. If a Veteran’s discharge status changes after death, the claim must be filed within two years of the discharge update. However, there’s no time limit for filing a claim for a service-connected burial, plot, or interment allowance.

Required Documents

When applying for burial benefits, ensure you include the following documents with your application:

  • Veteran’s military discharge papers (DD214 or other separation documents): Establishes the Veteran’s service history.
  • Veteran’s death certificate: Confirms the Veteran’s passing.
  • Documents or receipts for transporting the Veteran’s remains: Provides evidence of transportation costs.
  • Statement of account from the funeral director or cemetery owner: Includes information on the Veteran’s name, type of service or item purchased, any credits, and the unpaid balance.

Surviving Spouse Exemption

If you are the surviving spouse listed on the Veteran’s profile, you do not need to file a claim for burial costs. The VA automatically disburses a set amount to eligible surviving spouses upon receiving notice of the Veteran’s death. This amount helps cover the plot, cost of interment, or transportation of the remains to the cemetery.

Before You Go!

Understanding the process of applying for Veterans burial allowances can provide much-needed assistance during a difficult time. By meeting the eligibility criteria, submitting the required documents, and adhering to the specified timelines, you can navigate the application process smoothly and ensure that your loved one receives the recognition and support they deserve. The VA’s commitment to assisting families during these trying moments reflects its dedication to honoring the service and sacrifice of our Veterans.
